The Conqueror

I spent an evening a few nights ago watching a truly awful movie. The movie was panned by critics but eventually did produce a profit at the box office. Go figure?

The movie was called 'The Conqueror' (1956) and it starred John Wayne as the Mongol warrior Genghis Khan. He was terribly miscast, imagine someone who is very tall and talking with a very strong American accent trying to portray a short Chinese man. Ben Mankiewicz of Turner Classic movies, who introduced the film, said it was one of the worst movies made during the 1950s. He was right!

But there was one scene that caught my attention. A Shaman read the future using a long string of beads. I loved this piece of jewellery and since it was such a short scene, I imagined what kind of beads must have been on his string.

I was inspired to try and create something that looks similar to the string of beads used by the Shaman. My combination of beads includes horn, antler, gemstones, copper, silver, coral, ...

It is fascinating to me to read about these powerful necklaces and their use in so many cultures. Physical proximity does not seem to have any influence on the use of these amazing pieces.

I think I will try another one soon.

Lines of Jewellery

Ever since I started  making jewellery I have been told it is important to create a line. I was never quite sure just what that meant. Something common in each piece in the line? Technique? Materials? Style? Theme?

Maybe just chains?

Pendants on chains? Hearts?

Beads with pendants, ethnic, boho, tribal, "Downton Abby", the list goes on and on. I am not sure I can limit myself to any one category but as I create and learn more I can see a common thread in my work.

I like pieces that tell a story, are time-worn, architectural, ...

These pieces are great alone or layered......

Maybe I will try them with a braided cord? or leather?

I am going to experiment with this idea of a line with a couple of conditions, I must love everything I make and it must all be something I would wear.

Wish me luck!

LUXURY

LUXURY....

an interesting word with so many implications.

Living a life of luxury means something different for each of us. It may be a state of mind that influences our choices of what we buy, where we live and how we choose to spend our time. One way to indulge our sense of luxurious living is to surround ourselves with meaningful things. Our choices about food, fashion, art and jewellery are some of the ways that we can enjoy a sense of luxury.

Jewellery and art do not have to be high priced, to be luxurious. It must be well-made, well-designed and have a sense of style that sets it apart from all the others.  Local Handmade Luxury offers you art and jewellery that is made here in Calgary, by macmillanmarie Jewellery Design and by Natural Icon.

Jewellery may be a luxury but definitely an affordable luxury. And I believe that is the best kind.

The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth!

This year, the Calgary Stampede will run from July 3 to July 12. And like all stampedes, we will be attending the parade, eating lots of tasty food and listening to some terrific music. My family and I have many memories of free stage performances by singers like KD Lang, Ian Tyson and Reba McIntyre as well as some pretty clever magicians and some talented comedians, too.

We first visited Calgary in 1978. And during the next 5 years, we continued to make the long car trip from Regina to Calgary annually for the Stampede. We finally moved here in 1984. Our son and daughter grew up watching the rodeo and riding the midway rides. With lots of animals to see and so many exhibits to visit, the days never seemed long enough. It really is 'The Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth'.

The Stampede Parade soon became an annual event in our family. Early in the morning, on the first Friday of Stampede, the four of us would take the train downtown to stake out our piece of the pavement. The kids were always excited by the pre-parade fun, especially the clowns. The excitement would build as the parade made its way to us, through the streets of Calgary.

This year some friends and I will be starting a new tradition. On July 2, before the Stampede Sneak Preview opens at 6 pm, we will be hosting a show and sale of wonderful handmade products - some Stampede related - some not. So, why not join us for a good time and get an early start on enjoying the Calgary Stampede.

If you are in Calgary, or are nearby, we invite you to stop by the Wolf Willow Studio on July 2, between 1 pm and 9 pm. You can find us at 9 Spruce Centre SW, Calgary, Alberta T3C 3B7.

Drop by the The Stampede Show & Sale  for a great warm up to the Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth.

The Story of a Necklace .... Final Installment

Well the necklace is "done". What next.....

It is time to clean-up. Put the findings away. The extra beads, etc.... Sometimes I may take a chance and string the leftover beads randomly to see what I get.

With the addition of silver spacers to some leftover beads I have created a simple single strand necklace that can be worn wrapped for a two-strand bracelet.

Next some earrings and maybe another necklace. Long this time - "Downton Abby" style.

The Story of a Necklace ... continued part 3

After sifting through my stash and finding a collection that I think will satisfy my vision I can begin to put the necklace together.

I like to make sure my finished pieces are as strong as I know how to make them. Since this will be a relatively heavy piece I crimp each strand separately onto a closed ring - then I use jump rings to connect groups of strands onto the clasp. When done I have a beautiful 12 strand necklace composed of semi-precious gem stones as well as beautiful glass beads. I like the randomness of the piece very much. What do you think?

This is one of my favorite styles of necklaces. You can create many different options with this design.  The individual strands can vary in length or be all the same, you can mix your beads or keep them the same on every strand, the number of strands can vary - I am sure you get the idea.

Thanks for visiting.

The Story of a Necklace... continues

I have decided to work with the multiple stands of glass and semi-precious beads. This is my starting point.

Here they are in a more orderly fashion. It may make them easier to see.

Now I need to go collect more "pieces" to the puzzle. I think this will be a simple multistand since the beads are all over the map. Let's see what I find.

Clasp? Findings?  I originally thought I would use gold tone findings but I was not finding what I wanted.

More beads? I like to have options when I go to put it all together.

The extras include black glass beads, pyrite for sparkle and 2 sizes of dyed jade beads.

Let's see where this takes us next.....

..... to be continued

The Story of a Necklace..

I have a passion for jewellery, blown & vintage glass, books, travel, the list goes on and on…

Recently, I had to suspend my efforts at designing jewellery. My Mother's health has rapidly deteriorated (severe Alzheimers disease) and we had to move her into a new home where she will receive appropriate care. That whole process involved countless consultations, phone calls, correspondence, doctor evaluations and lots of stress. In my case, this process lasted only 7 months, but I have heard horror stories about other families spending up to 2 years or more to make things right.

Before I decided to return to designing more jewellery pieces, I decided (again!) to renew my efforts to try and get "my house in order". Not just the jewellery components stored in my home and in my garage, I mean cleaning and editing everything in every room. Whew! My daughter made a comment the other day that I have been cleaning my house since she was 10 (and she is now 30 years old and a new mother). Twenty years may seem like a long time, but I find that I am still hard at work trying to get “my house in order”.

So, the last thing a recovering hoarder like me needs, is even more issues and "stuff" to deal with. I know how important it is to take action to reduce stress (like meditation), but I also realize that it is just as important to devote some of my time and effort to doing something that is creative. Designing jewellery makes me feel good, provides me with a sense of accomplishment and I find that it is also helps me to reduce my stress level. How great is that! Performing this one activity gives me 3 benefits.

I love making jewellery because it provides me with a challenge, provides me with opportunities to learn new things and because it helps replace my stressful worries with happy and creative ideas. I love to learn and I am always trying new techniques.

In my next few blog entries, I thought it might be fun to record what it is like when I am designing and making new pieces of jewellery. This will likely take more than a few weeks, since I wish to share as much of the process as I can with you.

My jewellery can take many forms. I like using pearls, crystals, gemstones, beach stones, metal, driftwood, bone, ... you get the idea. I may design pieces based on tribal influences, or I may design a period piece that evolves the Roaring Twenties, or perhaps something that is simple and elegant that would remind you of someone like Audrey Hepburn.

Some jewellery pieces may look like I just walked down an alley or down a beach and picked up pieces of "stuff" that spoke to me. Sometimes I spend hours poring over beads and components in a very well stocked bead shop like K & S Jewellery in New York because I am just looking for an inspiration. At other times I simply get out my tools and design my own components.

My jewellery may contain found objects, ready-made items or unique components that I make myself using silver, copper, bronze, glass, wood and clay. Usually my creations are developed organically, almost as if by trial and error. I am definitely not someone who fabricates jewellery, based on using a ready-made kit, where I just follow instructions that someone gave to me.

I sometimes favor a design criteria that seems to be in excess. Some of us believe that if a little is good, then more is better. But I may have to work on restraining that urge in me. Using lots of large and colorful beads may be good, but so is the idea of using fewer components that are smaller, intricate and more delicate.

Pine Ridge Treasures Gemstone and Metal 2014 Blog Hop

This was a real challenge. I was sent some "Candy Jade" to work with. (I completely forgot to take a photo. Sorry.) I sat with those beads on my desk for a very long time. No inspiration. Nothing. They did not fit into my usual design esthetic. What was I going to do. By the time I decided what I wanted to create with these lovely beads time was running out. There was no time to wire wrap all these beautiful (but small) beads. So stringing it was.

I pulled some larger metal beads from my stash as well as a few spacers. The longer strand is very symmetrical with a vintage pendant at the centre. The second stand is completely random. I really like how they create a somewhat delicate but still in your face design.

Thanks Lisa of Pine Ridge Treasures for a great challenge.

Please enjoy the rest of the hop. Click here for a full list of participants.

Thanks for visiting. Enjoy the hop!

We're All Ears: July Challenge

The inspiration and challenge for July was a tough one. I am not an American so I am not familiar with all the patriotic traditions. The photo below was the inspiration for the monthly challenge.

Click here or here for more details regarding the hop. This image only spoke to me of colour. I rarely work in multi colours but I had no choice in my mind other than to use red, white and blue. I have been collecting all of my vintage trade beads in preparation for some new necklaces and these beads popped out. I realize they are extremely simple but this is what I like to wear. Light and simple.

Thank you EARRINGS EVERYDAY for this challenge.

Tuesday Eye Candy

Hi all! Wow what a summer!

Just finishing off a garden rehab that was started last summer. I have put in a vegetable garden for the first time in my life (potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, various herbs.....) and they need way more attention than I ever imagined. Oh where do the weeds come from?

I signed up for a once a month night market. I cannot seem to shake the urge to make "all new" stock for each event. I have been busy with experiments and prep that will hopefully see the light of day soon. (It definitely does not pay to try to reinvent yourself each time out.) 2 nights are complete and 2 more to go.

Hope these pieces intrigue you.

Enjoy!

Mojo Challenge - Week Eleven - Characters Welcomed

"Create a piece of jewelry inspired by a celebrity or pop culture character.  The character can be from a TV show, movie or book.  Fun, right? Ask yourself - what would she wear and go to town making it. "

Not sure why, but I have been fascinated for a very long time with trying to design something for Wilma Flintstone.

I really don't know why I decided to work with horn. Maybe my decision was based on the idea that animal horn would have been available in the "modern stone age". Maybe my decision was based on the idea that animal horn would be a good choice as an alternative material, since stone is so heavy. Also, everyone knows that Fred loved Wilma very much. That's why I am pretty sure that he would have given her a second necklace to wear for special occasions. It's easy for me to believe that Wilma would have worn something upscale when she attended a special occasion with Fred, like a dinner hosted by the Loyal order of Water Buffaloes.

The very rustic vintage silver that I used, may likely be a bit of a stretch for anyone to make during the "modern stone age", but I like to think that there could have been a talented maker of unique jewellery (someone a lot like me) living in Bedrock at that very special time. And just like me, that jewellery maker needed something to connect the pieces together. After all, Wilma deserves to wear something special, whenever she went out on the town of Bedrock.

I am happy with this piece. It did start out with the chain in the back but I think I prefer it in the front. I feel certain that Wilma would agree with me. I hope you do too..

Hope you like it. Enjoy!

A Great Day In Kananaskis

Yesterday was a great day -  we headed into Kananaskis Country for a wonderful hike....

And stopped at Barrier Lake / University of Calgary Field Station ....

After a liberal application of bug spray, we set off to see fields of yellow lady slipper orchids....

Imagine the side of a hill covered in clumps of these amazing flowers. We saw an amazing number of wildflowers along the trail. I have included a few here.

I also have a fascination with tree bark...... (just two photos - there were a lot of trees after all)

On the return portion of the first loop, we discovered we were on the Trans Canada Trail. Unfortunately we were unable to find where this portion of the trail went. There were only 3 markers, so it was not very well marked.

This site was used as a WW2 POW camp to house German prisoners. The building was one of the original guard towers from Camp #130.

We also had the pleasure of meeting this young deer - he was bigger than us and heading in our direction. He waited patiently, staring at us, until we had turned around and headed back down the trail. He began to follow us for awhile and then he headed off into the woods. Only after he had left for greener pastures, did we turn around and proceed up the path.

Mojo Challenge - Week Ten - Fashion & Beads

"Create a piece of jewelry inspired by your favorite clothing catalog or online store."

This entire weekly challenge has been fun and challenging. I have found it difficult to keep up but I do intend to finish all 12 weeks. (Just 2 more to go.)

This pendant speaks to my love of metal as well as very simple pendants. Simple hammered disks with just a hint of torch fired patina left, waxed to stop any further change in patina, connected with a small jump ring. I would wear this pendant with architectural pieces of clothing. Maybe black? or something strapless where this would lay against your skin. Some of my favourite clothing designers include Eileen Fisher, Kaliyana, or maybe eskandar. They all have a similar esthetic which I love. I enjoy the mix of metal and leather cord. Polished but still with a tribal hint. I like to call this style URBAN TRIBAL.

Thanks for visiting. Enjoy!

We're All Ears: JUNE Challenge

The challenge this month uses the photo below as inspiration. Click here or here for more details regarding the hop. I really enjoy this hop each month and I try to participate no matter what else may get left by the wayside. I love to wear earrings, but making them is another matter. This hop has really helped me to become more comfortable with the process of designing and then making my earrings. Thank you EARRINGS EVERYDAY for this challenge.

Guggenheim Museum: Source
I love visiting the Guggenheim and am inspired every time I go, because there is always something new and different to see. This is a perspective that I am not very familiar with, since I hardly ever look straight up, but I find it to be intriguing. Spirals like the one in this photo are a favorite of mine. I have been working for some time trying to perfect my wire spirals. I know that I am improving, but I feel that I still have a long way to go in my efforts to form copper into a spiral that is perfect.

This pair of earrings is made from 14g copper, then patina-ed. I have dished them so that will appear to have the same perspective as this photo of the museum walkways.

Bracelets

Bracelets / Bangles

Is there a difference to you? In my humble opinion a bangle is rigid where a bracelet is "softer".  I have always been a big fan of both but since I have large hands bangles have always been an issue for me. That has to be one of the big benefits of making my own. :)  My wrist is pretty normal in size but my hands are large. (Took after my Father on that one unfortunately.) I am in love with the arm party or stacked bracelet trend. I try to keep the stacked bracelets to a minimum though since I find it difficult to wear too many at once.

Just finished this turquoise bracelet. I am going to post more bangles / bracelets on Wednesdays for the next few weeks ---- come back and see what I come up with.

Thanks for visiting.

Tuesday Eye Candy

Wow! It has been awhile. I have been occupied with family issues. I am easily distracted and will use most any excuse to delay my jewellery work.

But it is time to get back in there and do what I love. I have been all over the map. Stacking bracelets, tribal pieces, found objects, sleek wood, more and more earrings. I have been loving most of what I am making but it not of a style. Decided I need to let that go. "If I like it I will make it" is my new motto.

I like to explore and try new techniques. Glitter, gold leaf stones, why not? Diamonds with plastic? I really admire artists who work in a "style" and I know I have talked about this before but...... embrace the difference -

Do you make jewellery for yourself that is different from what you make to sell? I often find I do not have any pieces to wear casually. So..... I made some casual jewellery. Lots of layering pieces, I love them but they do not sell..... Maybe it is the display? Maybe it is the wrong audience? Maybe, maybe, maybe..... Maybe don't worry so much and just make what you enjoy?

I hope to have some enamel pieces ready to show you next week - in the meantime here are some new pieces I have been working on ---

Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by.....
