Challenge of Music

I wish to thank Erin Prais-Hintz for creating this very unique challenge - designing jewellery inspired by instrumental music. I have enjoyed listening to this particular tune, which evokes seafaring images for me. And this challenge was the perfect opportunity for me to combine my love of the sea and love of jewellery elements that remind me of the sea. I usually try to clear my head when I work - I rarely have any back ground "noise" of any kind playing when I design. My preference has always been to work in complete silence and not to analyze my motivation while I design. But this challenge forced me to change how I work. So, while I listened to this music, I visualized it as a piece of jewellery.

The beginning of this piece of music takes me immediately to the sea. I find it to be very powerful and motivating. I have an affinity for water and this music very clearly represents an "ocean" to me. Since I am a Canadian familiar with both coasts, I feel that this tune definately represents life in the Atlantic provinces, rather than the Pacific coast.

My necklace is composed of things from the sea, washed up on the maritime shore - after a storm perhaps? - sea glass, stones, old fishing net pieces, mother of pearl, shells, starfish and clam charms, silver coral pieces, driftwood, .........

Hope you like it....

    1. I just checked your posting and could say the same for your piece and more - my daughter was a dancer for many years and your piece took me back to a very precious time. I am grateful for your comments on my piece and the memories your necklace evoked.

  5. Beautiful and interesting "wrack line necklace". It's like part treasure chest, part beach find in a elegant fusion. Like the inclusion of the fishing net, which adds interest and adds to the feeling of a wrack line. I live near the coast (by a much smaller sea than the Atlantic though: Kattegat between Sweden and Denmark) and enjoy walking along the beach. Mostly between the water and the wrack zone, where you can find most of the little treasures. The pearls perhaps looks as they come from a treasure chest, but to me they also look like seafoam, flowing frothing sea water. It captures the seas meeting the shore. Fab job!

    1. Your use of "wrack line necklace" had never occurred to me. What a lovely turn of phrase. I found this link, "http://www.wgbh.org/cainan/article/?item_id=3285617" which gives another beautiful interpretation. I am going to do another one - only this time I will vary the length of the strands. You have given me great inspiration.

  7. Ah, hoping we like it? How about we love it! The music reminds me of walking on the beach early in the morning with no one around. It's like a wiggle of toes in the wet sand - light but not sicky sweet. There are always treasures on the beach. It's a beautiful necklace.

  8. A mermaid would wear that.
I like the collection/treasures feel to the multi strands. What are the stick-like pieces? Representing driftwood?

    1. Thank you. The stick-like pieces are vegetable dyed pieces of centre drilled wood. I thought they evoked driftwood.

  9. What an uplifting musical selection, Judy! And do we ever need those images of the sea after this long snowy winter. Your gorgeous necklace, and the way you have photographed it, looks like it was left to you as a gift... perhaps by a mysterious visitor from the depths? A beautifully crafted piece!

    1. I truly like the music as well - not sure I like all the visual images from the musicians but I tried to ignore that part of the video. And I am going to look more carefully for that visitor! Have a great day.....

  12. What a great music selection - it absolutely reminds me of the Eastern seaboard. And your necklace? Holy cow! It reminds me of a just-opened treasure chest with all the spoils spilling out. I love the intricate design that is offset with the quiet color palette. Beautiful!

    1. I love the music too - it took me some time to select the music since Mannheim Steamroller creates such lovely music. I love all the choices. The necklace seemed to come together naturally which is not usually my experience. This challenge was so inspiring. Thanks for your kind comments. I appreciate it.

    1. Thanks --- I really like your earrings (I find them very difficult to design) - and they do "speak" ragtime.

  14. I really need to head to the east coast! Hubby went to PEI golfing once but without me and your music, images and beautiful necklace remind me that I'd really like to experience some of that air, comb some of those beaches in person. I really enjoy such a textural piece.

    1. I find I agree with your comment on your blog ---- a piece that photographs well does not hang well and vice versa - I have finally figured out the hanging problem (I think) --- I appreciate your comments and agree that a trip to the east coast would be amazing. Thank you again.

  16. Your necklace is a spot on match to the music. The components remind me of something that may have washed ashore from an ancient shipwreck, perhaps gathered by a wife awaiting her husband's return from the sea. Lovely work!

  17. What a beautiful piece of jewelry! I love that it looks as if you were walking along the beach and just gathered up the bounty you found there. This is a piece that is fit for a mermaid princess to be sure! What a lovely piece of music you chose. Thank you for sharing it with us and your art too! Enjoy the day. Erin

  18. Thanks - I have taken a photography class since I have had a really hard time getting a photo I could use - I am so much happier with what I take now - still a long way to go - but at least useable photos. I am glad you like the necklace - your piece is really innovative and creative - love it.

    1. Your music is amazing - I find it unbelievable that music is able to evoke such a sense of place - my mother-in-law was a Campbell before marrying her husband, also a Campbell ---- this music takes me to their homeland -

      Thanks for your kind words.
